It was meant to be a gesture
That mark across your face
It’s too late now for sorry
It’s too late now for grace

Semaphore

Sleeve #151

At the end of the year there’s been a competition where the three first who asked for an artwork got the first sleeves of 2019 : #150, #151, #152.

With Karen Dunn as cover model ‘Semaphore’, #151, sounds like a lost ‘Laid’ outtake, all spaces and atmosphere, delicate guitar and Tim Booth singing lullabies.

The song is like downshifting into first gear. With a mournful, bugle-like trumpet call, echoing keyboard plinkings, and the slow ‘n’ steady plucking of electric guitar, Tim Booth intones the tale of a romantic gulf that’s too wide to breach with words.

“I’m so cynical I can’t change,” sings Booth as he tells of bathing in a waterfall in America. “We survive in spite of a desire to stray” he offers on Semaphore, which sounds like preaching to self over icy keyboards. Not much has changed lyrically then – but this isn’t the self-importance the band has occasionally strayed in to, this comes from deeper personal experience.

« On the softer side, “Semaphore” and “Of Monsters and Heroes and Men” would have been unthinkable were it not for the band’s atmospheric Eno years. Certainly they’re more convincing as mellow anthems than Coldplay’s recent attempts, undercut as those are by the subtle sense of self-loathing that surrounds Chris Martin.
